Uninsured Motorist Cover - Insurance Coverage For Your Protection

In the State of Florida, numerous drivers do not carry bodily injury liability coverage and are considered uninsured drivers, many more are underinsured drivers or drivers that carry inadequate insurance coverage for injuries and damages they may cause. Recent studies have shown that as many as 25% of drivers, perhaps more, in the State of Florida are uninsured that is they carry no insurance. Uninsured or underinsured coverage (UM coverage) is one of the most important insurance protections for the safety and security of you and your family. It protects you when you suffer injuries as a result of an uninsured or underinsured driver or when you suffer injuries in an automobile accident when the driver who caused the accident cannot be identified - for example a hit and run accident.

The purpose of UM coverage is to allow you the same coverage that would have been available had the negligent driver of an uninsured or underinsured vehicle had liability coverage in the amount of your UM coverage limits. In Florida, the law does not require drivers to carry bodily injury liability coverage. Those drivers that do not have bodily injury liability coverage do not have insurance which could pay for your personal injuries including compensable damages provided by law such as medical expenses, lost wages and human factor damages including pain and suffering damages. If the driver who causes the accident is uninsured or underinsured, it is very likely that your damages including medical bills, lost wages and your pain and suffering may not be paid or recoverable. UM coverage is insurance for you and your family. You can also stack or multiply the amount of your UM coverage based upon the cars you own if you elect the "stacking" provision when you purchase coverage with your automobile insurance carrier.

UM coverage is a very important protection for your safety because if injured by an uninsured or underinsured driver, you can make a claim against your own insurance company for your UM coverage for the injuries and damages you sustained. It may be the most important insurance coverage you can obtain for your protection and safety as a driver in the State of Florida. You can address this with your automobile insurance agent or contact the law firm of Casey D. Shomo, P.A. as we would be happy to discuss with you the importance of UM coverage and how this would protect you in your time of need. An important answer to protecting yourself and your family when that unforeseen automobile accident occurs is to make sure that you purchase UM coverage for your protection. Although you may believe you are "fully covered" the likelihood is you are not.
